Check out this genre description: an action platformer with metroidvania elements, roguelike elements, and meta progression. Another description would be that this is a fast action game with deep and challenging combat that keeps you going with interesting unlocks over time. The world of Dead Cells is vaguely described by little nuggets of text found around the dungeons, but it is clearly secondary to the gameplay. Platforming that is precise and satisfying, and a combat system that seems inspired by the best elements of fighting games and action RPGs. In Dead Cells, you have the ability to cancel any action with a dodge (love it), the ability to switch orientation in the middle of an attack animation (love it), and every attack and status effect is clearly shown (which can be a bit confusing to look at in the beginning).
I looked at this on Steam, and it seems real good, so I did something I shouldn't have, and preordered it on PS4, saving 40 DKK.
It's out this tuesday.
It just unlocked at midnight, and I played it for the first time. It's very cool, snappy controls, lots of mystery and a steady flow of mechanics introduced in Metroid-like ways, even though the levels are randomly generated. I look forward to playing more of this.
I'm slowly gaining progress. I found the Duplex Bow I-L which was amazing - I need a blueprint for that. There was a mysterious prisoner next to a skull flag, but I didn't dare to go there. I think it's like a mini boss that drops a nice item.
Defeating The Concierge unlocked the daily challenge run, which I tried a couple of times. It doesn't seem to give me cells for upgrades, though, so I'll save it for later. Back on track, I reached the Ossuary miniboss and immediately got murdered. I should get that guy and see if he has a Rune for me.
Next up is getting through Toxic Sewers, use the Ram Horn to access the Ancient Sewers, and then there's supposed to be a boss fight. The Spider Rune should be in the next level, Slumbering Sanctuary. I'm getting this info from this awesome map from deadcells.gamepedia.com.
I did get through the Ancient Sewers and reached the second boss fight, Conjunctivius, a big beholder-looking thing. It killed me twice. I think I should be more careful, and remember to bring arrow traps.
I just had the best run. In the Promenade of the Condemned, I killed an Elite and obtained an amazing weapon: a Meat Skewer II-L, a rapier with a amazing stats, including getting increased movement speed after killing an enemy. This weapon allowed me to stab my way through the Forgotten Sepulcher, defeat The Time Keeper (the Clock Room boss), and reach level 6, the High Peak Castle. The Forgotten Sepulcher was an exciting level, the darkness that kills you makes everything more intense, and reminded me of both the Catacombs from Dark Souls and the dark jungle levels in Spelunky.
I'm a bit confused about how keys work. I did manage to bring a Gardener Key to The Ramparts and get the Moonflower Key, but I'm not sure what those are for.
Next goal: Go through the Toxic Sewers, use the horn to get to the Ancient Sewers, defeat Conjunctivius, go to the Slumbering Sanctuary, and get The Spider's Rune.
I was a bit unclear of how the weapon stats worked. I think I got it now: X DPS, +Y % damage means that the weapon deals X damage per second, and the +Y % damage just indicates *why* the DPS is what it is. It is determined by it's level (the number after the weapon name) and if it's a '+' weapon.
You can get health back by dealing damage to enemies, similarly to Bloodborne
The Dark Souls room is awesome, it got me 50 Souls ... I mean Cells
The 'X % damage taken' stat means a cursed weapon that increases the damage you take from enemies
I tried to use the Hunter's Grenade, but failed several times and died from curse.
My 13th recording went amazingly, even though I was really tired, and just wanted to collect a few Cells and go to bed. But instead, I accomplished everything I could have wanted: I defeated Conjunctivius, went to the Slumbering Sanctuary, defeated an Elite Caster with no trouble at all and got The Spider's Rune! I reached The Clocktower, but didn't survive the ascent.
I finally found all 3 Gardener's Keys. The third one was hidden in the environment. After obtaining the blueprint behind the 3 locked doors in the Promenade, I think the only use for the Gardener's Keys is getting the Moonflower Key in The Ramparts, Graveyard, and Sepulchre stages.
Went to the Clock Tower again. Those teleport areas are absolutely lethal, even when you're prepared for it. You are thrown directly into a combat situation without time to think. The Forgotten Sepulcher is interesting to play, it's like a Sonic underwater level, but without annoying water physics ruining your controls. I also defeated The Time Keeper again.
I have a lot of blueprints, so I'm putting a stop on blueprint hunting for a little while. Also, getting the Hunter's Grenade on the first level would be way easier if I could retain 10.000 gold, so I need that upgrade. I did a normal run and reached the Graveyard for the first time.
