  • I like this, good, fast Mirror's Edge-style movement, brutal first person combat, and a big, intimidating, zombie-infested city to roam around.
  • I survived the first night in Dying Light, but man, that was a heart-pounding nightmare! I barely escaped from the monstrocities that roam the night. During night time, the XP gets double, so maybe I should try it again sometime.

  • I'm doing a weird movie and chocolate fetch quest. And murdering zombies with a cricket bat.
  • In general, the parkour controls are great. They are very responsive, it's easy to hit your intended target, and there is a lot of leeway in distances that makes it flow in a very natural way. The combat is OK, although I wish I had some form of block or counter. Maybe I'll get it later. I don't like throwing shuriken, as the game won't recognize holding the button down before the character animation is ready, which is somewhat annoying. Also, I can't seem to find a way to cancel a throw. But in my opinion, the worst issue is climbing controls, specifically climbing down. There is no direct climb down action, except for on ladders, It is almost impossible to jump down and grab a ledge, and I've fallen a few times, trying to descend from towers that I had to climb. Very frustrating, and extra stressful because of the first person immersion.
  • I'm doing gangster work. I don't care much for the story, as usual, and is barely paying attention. Actually, I've been muting the cutscenes, so I can continue listening to my podcasts.

  • I went back to school to kill some dudes and some zombie dudes. This part reminds me a bit of Condemned. Apart from being another first-person combat game with zombie-like enemies, both games also has a feeling of intense unpredictability.

  • I showed the game to Anders, and got myself into a whole load of zombie trouble. This game can have some really interesting moments.

  • I'm doing the gas valve mission, and figured out an important trick: if you stand on a truck and kneel, you can totally reach zombie heads with your sledgehammer. I racked up a lot of safe kills using that technique.
  • This is the first time I tried using the Elgato to record a video from the PS4. I had to disable HDCP to get it to work (which means that Netflix doesn't work anymore), and I'm now using OBS to record instead of Elgato's unstable Game Capture software. OBS actually crashed during my first Dying Light recording. I was using the 32-bit version, and after looking online, I'm trying the 64-bit version instead. I recorded an hour of footage with that version without any problems.

  • After surviving several nights, I finally found a Bolter (green spitter guy) alone and murdered it. It was scary and tense and fun.
  • 2018-09-17
  • The guns in this game are not great, but it's a real power trip to be able to kill enemies at a distance.
  • 2018-09-21
  • I went through the sewers and shot a bunch of dudes. As usual, not really following the story. It's not very interesting.
  • I'm in mission 7/14. This game is long.
  • The 'angry smiley face' mission was intense and scary, and reminded me of the Condemned games. Also, the bow is a great weapon, it's so much fun to turn stronger zombies into pincushions.
  • Completed 10/14. The mission pace has picked up.
  • 2018-09-22
  • The museum is done, including an acid-trip sequence with floating islands representing memories. This has become a trope in the last couple of years. I wonder what the first instance of this was.
  • A very tense sequence with several claustrophic moments, including a horrible fight inside a bathroom. I managed to reach the radio tower.
  • Completed the game. The last sequence of the game where you fight or run past a ridiculous number of zombies without clear indication of where to go, is pretty awful and annoying. Apart from that, the vast majority of the game has been extremely enjoyable, dynamic, and at times scary.
