Analysis

  • This game started making me think about what the term 'pixel art' refers to. This game has a low resolution, but very distinctively does not conform to the common aesthetics of pixel art. So, if this game is *not* pixel art, what *is* pixel art. I realized that pixel art implies that the artist worked on the single-pixel level, that lines and dots are a single pixel wide. The art of this game is created with rough brush strokes, more like a low resolution version of a piece of concept art. The end result has a much different look than pixel art, more like an oil painting.

  • This is a game, very similar in structure, gameplay, and themes to Blasphemous, but instead of the classic pixel art style of Blasphemous, Moonscars has a rough paint brushed look that is quite unique. I'm enjoying it the same way I enjoyed Blasphemous, but I'm missing a bit of the satisfying graphical details in the enemies.
