  • After just finishing Gears of War: Judgment without raising a brow, without enjoying the impressive if unoriginal graphics, and playing through the fine-tuned combat without really concentrating, while also having played parts of Dead Space 3 without having the motivation to continue, I thought I might have reached a point where the big, expensive games of this generation had started to fail leaving an impression on me. Turns out I was wrong. I put in Bioshock Infinite to check out if it was something I wanted to play, and after the graphically unimpressive lighthouse sequence with the strangely vivid dialogue of the two fellow boat passengers, I was not prepared for what Columbia had in store for me. The dream-like floating city is an impressive vision of an alternative turn of the century Utopia, with airships, robotic horses, amazing anachronistic barbershop quartet versions of Beach Boys songs, magic tricks, games, grammophone recorders, all in the shadow of strong religious guidance. I ran aimlessly around and stared at everything like a small child at a carnival, unaware of anything around me. And when everything turned rotten, all the elements of the world were characterized and imbued with meaning and history, and the darkness of Columbia seemed all the more cruel for it. I can't wait to play more of this.

  • After listening to a Watch Out For Fireballs podcast about the Bioshock, I went back and played a bit more of this. The frame rate issues with this game are a bit disappointing, and I haven't missed the blurry mess that was Unreal 3 games, but apart from that, this game is still very interesting.
