Ports of Call was a fairly dry strategy game, but had a certain appeal due to the detailed graphics by James Sachs, known for the groundbreaking artwork on Defender of the Crown.

  • My simulation-hungry brother coerced me into playing this with him. I never really got the hang of it. The only thing I liked about Ports of Call was the title screen, and the pictures of the different boats you could buy, starting out with some rusty shit bucket and presumably ending up with big awesome ships. The title screen was a beautifully drawn and color cycled background with atmospheric ambience, unique for the time. The realtime ship control sequences was where it all vent bad for me. The sluggish boat controls were frustratingly hard, and I usually ended up crashing the boat.
