- After reading the great reviews and being very impressed with Ground Zeroes, and fascinated by some of the best trailers I have ever seen for a video game, preordering this was a no-brainer. Can't wait for tuesday.
- I'm unbelievably excited for this. I'm reading wikis about the story of the Metal Gear series, watching Metal Gear Scanlon on Giantbomb, and listening to a Metal Gear episode of the game podcast Cane & Rinse. Metal Gear Metal Gear Metal Gear.
- Playing through the prologue was an intense and impressive experience. With such an incredible attention to detail, the insane spectacle becomes almost believable. But it nags me to no end that the prologue casts doubt on your identity as Big Boss. What is going on?
- Completed mission 6/31. I got to meet Skullface and I killed all the Skulls with the Honey Bee. In fact, I killed everyone. The base was empty, when Big Boss was done with it.
- Damn, D-Dog is possibly the cutest video game dog yet.
- Completed 11/31 missions, and retrieved D-Dog and Quiet, the almost-naked sniper girl.
- I now have all 4 companions, and tried a mission with Quiet, the naked sniper girl. Her humming is driving me completely crazy, and she seems to have no personality whatsoever. Furthermore, the other new companion is a cool robot that I can ride around. The choice is very obvious.
- I rescued some children from a diamond mine and for some reason brought them onto Outer Heaven. And now they'll become part of Big Boss' army. I see where this is going. I like the way Big Boss slowly becomes the villain we know from the previous games.
- The Resident Evil 4-esque horrors of mission 20 left me way more interested in the story. There are some geniuine well-crafted horror moments in an otherwise pretty dry campaign. I can't wait to see what is going on with Skullface and his disgusting experiments.
- Yes, we're building a Metal ... I mean Battle Gear. I wonder if I'll get to ride it! :)
- I feel like Darth Vader during the early stages of building the Death Star.
- This really got its hooks into me this weekend. What an amazing game.
- Apart from the dumb staff epidemic thing. What an annoying solution to a weird puzzle.
- Completed 26 missions.
- Completed 29 missions.
- Completed the game. Completed 31 missions. What a weird ending. The encounter with the Skullface character lacked intensity, and was followed by an uninspired, if awesome looking boss fight with Metal Gear Sahelanthropus. The thing that sticks out compared to the other Metal Gear games is the lack of explicit storytelling. A lot of things are hinted at, not much is fully explained. Certainly a bit more elegant in its storytelling than its predecessors, the story told until now also seems a bit simplistic and unfulfilled. Well, maybe after some more missions, everything will be explained...
- The credits music is fantastic; tense and brutal sounding.
- Trailer for Chapter 2? So many spoilers!
- 50 missions in total, it seems. So chapter 2 would be 18 missions.
- From replaying a couple of missions I learned that you can extract dudes, escape from the mission before it's complete, but the extracted dudes will still join you. Also, the mission status doesn't show whether you've extracted a dude with a specific skill or not.
- To see the true ending, the Internet says I should complete mission 46. How to unlock mission 46 is the subject of discussion, but here are some of the requirements mentioned:
- Main mission 32,38,41, and 43.
- Side Ops: AI Pod, Man on Fire, Escaped Children 1-5.
- Listen to all story (yellow) cassette recordings.
- Possibly, upgrade all parts of the base to level 3.
- Completed mission 32 and 38, and rescued 2/5 children.
- I started watching Metal Gear Scanlon V (Giantbombs longplay of this game), as I've watched the previous ones, and I just realized that the assassin in the start of the game is Quiet. No doubt about it.
- I have gotten all the escaped children back, and completed missions 32, 38, and 41, and listened to all story recordings. I needed to unlock mission 43, and what I gathered from internet discussions was to try and play Side Ops, such as rescueing wandering soldiers. I played one of those, spent a long time figuring out that I should use a stunning weapon to shoot the dude, and now I unlocked mission 43.
- 39% completion.
- Completed the game. I completed mission 46, the 'true ending', and the big reveal was exactly what I thought it was from the beginning, no more, no less. Too bad, I had hoped for something more crazy. At least the game has implications on the original MSX game, which is pretty cool. And in the end, Venom Snake takes his Sony-tape out of his Walkman, and puts it into a Sony Bitcorder (tape deck for old ass computers) hooked up to a neat looking MSX machine. Presumably to play Metal Gear. :)
- For the record, I I now have 44% completion.
- I rescued Hideo Kojima from the Russians and gave him back his glasses.
- Joakim wanted to see some Metal Gear, so I did a few side ops, with him and my nieces looking on.
- I did a few more Side Ops and is now at 47% completion.
- I tried a match of Metal Gear Online, which seems to work well. I shot some dudes and they shot me.
- That mission 49, Occupation Forces [SUBSISTENCE], was pretty tricky. I finally got through it by shelling two tanks with a mortar, then proceeding on foot to chase the final tank. When I caught up, I noticed a parked rocket tank, which I immediately stole and opened fire on the tank. I slammed into the back of the tank, and the two vehicles shot at each other at point blank range, until they both exploded, and my mission was complete. Not elegant, but it did the trick. :D
- Finally upgraded Mother Base to level 4 of R&D, after gathering some Common Metal and Fuel resources. Now I just have to wait 3.5 hours for the facility to be built. Damn, that's a lot. I just tested that development time does indeed pass in the chopper, but the development time UI doesn't necessarily update while watched.
- 50% completion!
- Got the Disappearance trophy. - Completed Side Op 150, an annoying battle sequence with numerous tanks. Quiet has left in a sequence of cutscenes that seemed to try to invoke emotions, but I never cared about Quiet at all, so I don't really mind her leaving too much. It's not like if D-Dog left, that would be heartbreaking.
- I have now completed every main mission except the last one, mission 50. The Metallic Archaea mission was hard.
- I made a CGM-25 rocket launcher and beat the last main mission, the Extreme difficulty version of the Sahelantropus boss fight.
- After that, I found Paz and watched a disgusting cutscene that gives a weak explanation for why she is still alive. I then went out and did some side ops with a female member of my crew. I was disappointed to find that I couldn't play as Ocelot or any of the other key characters, even though I assigned them to the Combat Unit.
- 57% completion.
- Martin was at 1%, so we played through a few missions, and I gave a guided tour of murder through Afghanistan.
- I played a few Side Ops on my new awesome Sony KDL50W809CB TV! Everything looks so great and is super responsive.
- Now I've unlocked weapon customization. That's a really late game feature addition.
- I replayed Mission 9, abducting all the soldiers I could get my hands on, trying to get a Cybernetics Specialist. I didn't succeed. Apparently, he's one of the dudes in the gulch running from west to east at the southern end of the map.
- Got him.
- I did a few Side Ops in Afghanistan and gathered enough money to start research a Wormhole upgrade to my Fulton Device.
- My current goal is to develop the Infinity Bandana, I need to have R&D and Combat Unit level 48. To level these up, I need better crew. Most of them are currently A or A+. I should try to get A++ and S rank guys to replace them. According to a couple of sources, the rank of the soldiers in the battlefield are determined by the level of my base, and they might be slightly higher level in Mission 29. Apart from that, I need Fuel Resources and Common Metal to level up my base. According to this video,, I can farm around 16.000 Common Metal and Fuel Resources in a couple of minutes in Episode 30. To do this efficiently, I should probably use the Stealth Camouflage.
- The quest for the Infinity Bandana continues, 1.5 years later. I need more high-level R&D and Combat dudes. My Combat Unit Platform will be leveled up in 1 hour and 40 minutes. Even though they had over a year since I last played the game.
- More Side Ops and soldier abductions.
- Roamed about Angola and did Side Ops. I'm now level 47 and 46 in Combat and R&D levels.
- More Side Ops, mine clearing, wandering soldiers. Combat level is 48, R&D level is 47. Very close to the Infinity Bandana.
- I did it! I finally reached level 48 in both Combat and R&D! And started developing the Infinity Bandana. It should be ready in 1 hour and 20 minutes.
- Finally I can use the Infinity Bandana! This has just become a completely different game. Now, I'll build towards level 60 R&D, where I can get the Stealth Camouflage, which seems like another game-breaking device.
I'm back, playing side missions. I think I lost all the 2018 progress, I guess the saves never went to the cloud.

I just did all the training missions on Mother Base except the very annoying R&D one. I used the cardboard box fast travel system to get around between the different ones. Then I fell down and died, and I lost all the progress and have to start over. How does it not save that I did a training mission?

I finally completed all 157 SIDE OPS. Now what should I do?
I still have the feeling of not knowing what to do in this game. I don't really think there is any enjoyment in capturing all the animals, slowly leveling up my crew, developing all the weapons, or replaying all the story missions with S-rank. Maybe this is it for now with this game.
