Facts

  • You can replay missions for MRP to unlock aircraft and enhancements.
  • This game has 20 missions.
  • Hold L2 to brake which allows for a smaller turn radius. Hold L2+R2 to do a quick turn. Let go as quickly as possible to avoid stalling.

Analysis

  • The F-35C cost 840,000 MRP, which is very expensive. Funny, given that the current discussion about this aircraft program is that the cost is ridiculously high.
  • I think I got the hang of avoiding enemy missiles. It's surprisingly simple: enemy missiles have slower turning radius than your plane. You wait until they are close (when the HUD alert starts beeping fast), and do a quick turn, and they will fail to hit.

  • I played through mission 1-2. Like the other Ace Combat games, this is a great looking arcade air combat game.

  • Completed mission 3-4, and bought the mighty Grumman F-14 Tomcat.

  • I got access to the awesome Lockheed F-104C Starfighter (1958), so I had to try it. It was maybe a little bit weak for mission 5, and I failed.
  • I exchanged the F-104C for the F-14D Super Tomcat for mission 5. For mission 6, I tried using the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II from 1972 (also known as the 'Warthog'). The damage from AA guns slowly overwhelms me, but it turns out that you can get your plane fixed in the far east corner of the map.
  • Defeated mission 6 with the A-10, and started mission 7. I had to switch to the F14 for this dog fighting-heavy mission.

  • This was the first time I tried flying a plane in VR. I've flown plenty of space ships, but a real plane on Earth is different, it feels more intense and exciting. The simple but effective graphics really shine in this mode.

  • I've been playing Air Combat on the PSX, and I remembered that I had this awesome modern version lying around unfinished. I really should get back to this.

  • I completed missions 8-10, having lots of fun. I don't like their style of campaign missions where surprises always happens mid-mission, turning a ground attack into a dog fight, and you have to fight off F-15s with your A-10. Every time it happens I just want to restart the mission with the appropriate aircraft instead. I guess some sort of multirole aircraft would be the choice for new missions.
  • Completed mission 12. I'm trying to unlock the F-35 Lightning II, which has awesome stats. I guess modern planes are good. I still feel like the Starfighter is probably better. ;)
  • I did mission 11 with the F-15 with the pulse laser to grind for MRP. It netted 139,332 MRP.
  • Mission 12 started as a stealth mission where you needed to navigate a gulch and avoid being spotted, and then a big base assult. It was super fun. I used the F-15 with the pulse laser again.

  • Completed mission 18-19. I got enough MRP to buy the F-22A. I'm curious to see how this beast performs.

  • Completed the game on Easy difficulty. I completed my first Ace Combat game. The last mission was annoying - for the game to tell its silly story, the final mission ends with a climactic flight into a tunnel and through a space elevator, relying on abilities that you never learned through the rest of the game. But overall, I had a lot of fun with Ace Combat 7, the dogfighting combat is fun and has mechanics that were fun to learn and make sense, and the game looks and sounds great.
