After listening to the Nextlander podcast ep. 144, I learned that:
Golden Trove Beetle - consumed to permanently enable a character to NPC to carry more weight. That is the only thing they do, consume immediately.
Solo Mode - Apparently, you can kill your main pawn by throwing them off a cliff, and you will be alone until you choose to summon them again at a riftstone.
Item Storage - Go to the Innkeeper and select Organize Storage. You don't need to carry upgrade materials, they can be used directly from Storage.
Camping Kit - You need at least one to set up camp and restore your characters. They only get 'spent' if you are attacked while camping. They are heavy, which limits how many you can carry around.
Dynamic Combat - The combat of this game is more dynamic than any other action RPG I can think of.
Failure Conditions - The online consensus suggests that you can fail quests without any gameplay consequences, except losing access to other quests. The game should still be finishable. Also, the game doesn't seem to scale with your level, so you can level up your character to match combat encounter difficulty.
