Death clock - Halfway through the game, there is a countdown where you can fail the campaign. It can be disabled in the custom difficulty settings.
Pause Game - In Options/Gameplay, you can enable 'Pause Game' which replaces the slow motion function with a complete pause, allowing you to consider your moves carefully.

I'm worried about getting frustrated with this game, so maybe I'll play it on the easiest difficulty to try to get as far as possible before getting annoyed.
I started a game on a custom difficulty setting (easy, no death clock) and played through the tutorial mission. It feels a bit weird to control the characters indirectly using a controller, but I did get used to it, and it seems to work OK.
