On sale for 159.10 DKK. Used christmas present money.

I roamed around the starting area for a while, getting to grips with the combat and upgrade systems.

I wandered around the scrap pile. I love the way this area is designed, it is a tiny interconnected microcosm. I destroyed a Smelter Bot.

Act I/V completed. I got the P.A.X. to hit itself with its missiles and punished it for its stupidity.
  • [8364]
Act II is a bit more intimidating, with a lot of claustrophoic, Dead Space-like corridors.

I've been slowly exploring Central Production B, and remembered how to block, parry (timed block that allows for a follow-up attack), backstab (R1 from behind), and use drones to attract enemies. I'm using a giant hammer, which requires a lot of care to avoid taking damage. I also learned that big weldring droids have weak back armour. I finally discovered a shortcut enabled by smashing a certain type of door, that is breakable for some reason.

Next up: use the shortcut to get back to area with the bridge, where several dudes shoot at you, and cross it to get to the recycling area.

I did what I set out to do. This area is large and confusing. I'm starting to get the hang of the combat, and feel a bit more in charge.

I think I reached the boss arena for this area, but went back through a shortcut and lost my way.
  • [8373]
Looking at the recording, I think I know where to go: Using the shortcut to the red light area, I should take the first door on the left, go past the almost dead guy on the floor, follow the giant tubes to the Recycling area, through a gate at the bottom to a room with a door that leads to the boss area.

Using video recordings to analyze games after the fact is an interesting activity, one that before this decade wasn't practical in all but a few games with replay functionality.

I figured it out, beat the awesome looking FIREBUG, and entered the Resolve Biolabs.

Playing The Surge while having a particularly bad influenza is not really recommended. I didn't gain a lot of progress.

I still have the flu, but did a little better and gained some progress. I had a particularly heartbreaking experience, where I after a long search discovered a button to disable guard systems, and one meter from being able to turn it off, I was murdered by a Bloodhound. I *hate* those things.

I have returned to Central Production B. This is where I wish I had payed a bit more attention to what NPCs are saying, because I have no idea why I'm here. Anyway, my drone can open doors now, so that's great.

The Gorgon suit is supposed to great with regards to stamina regeneration. I should craft that.

I've resumed my The Surge save, and has been wandering around Central Production B to get my bearings. I still very much enjoy the style of this game, and how well-implemented it is in almost every way.
  • [10615]
OK, I went from Central Production B, via the Material Depot, took the elevator to Toxic Waste Maintenance, went through the gross tunnel and down to Suppor Link 1, over the bridge to Circulation Tower, up the stairs and through the confusing dark green area, talked to Irina Beckett, up using an exo-lift to where a giant building robot is, and finally found a shortcut exo-lift back to the Material Depot! This game is expecting to much of my skills to navigate without a map.

After unlocking the shortcut, which I think leads to a boss, I've been roaming around, trying to find more items before I proceed. In the 'Discarded Safety Equipment' area, there was a few sleeping dog robots that don't respawn after killing them.

I started the 'Big Sister 1/3' boss fight, and what a nightmare this is. This boss is that special place where it's both fiendishly difficult and technically flawed. First boss stage: The lock-on might prevent you from changing your target when you need it, due to the enemies being off-screen. You will then be hit from off-screen, and the camera might get stuck behind a railing that blocks your view. Second boss stage: You are attacked by four welder arms, electrified floor, and a beam that periodically sweeps back and forth. It's chaotic, and both locking on to the arms and even hitting them is frustrating. Finally, the third boss stage: The camera becomes fixed far behind you, which looks like nowhere else in the game, and is very tricky to get used to. While you're getting used to it, a giant robot hand thing is crushing you. I have died a ridiculous number of times by now.

I'm back after researching a bit, and have decided to switch to a fast twin-rigged weapon. I'm roaming around the area, leveling up my weapon proficiency, and finding important items, especially a rig upgrade that allows me to have more modifications installed.

Got the Big Sister trophy. - I did it! Here's my tips for beating 'Big Sister 1/3':
    • Equip all the health items and health power-ups you can
    • Disable auto-lock-on
    • Don't lock on during the first two stages
    • In the final stage, keep all the way close to the stem of the boss. You need to damage both the steam and the head, and you need to position yourself so you can hit it, but staying close to the steam is pretty safe
  • [10618]
Very important fact: You change between equipped mods (e.g. health) using D-pad L/R and the drone power using D-pad U.

I'm exploring the R&D area, and discovered the horrible Proteus Test Subjects, which looks like a human head fused to a mechanical skeleton. Disturbing.
  • [10673]
The R&D area is very complicated and interconnected. I'm having trouble finding my way around.

This game takes the idea of a highly interconnected world where you unlock shortcuts, popularized by Dark Souls, and takes it to an extreme. The Central Production, Biolabs, R&D area is extremely tightly integrated, with a large number of unlockable shortcuts, and takes up the majority of the game. Unfortunately, for people like myself who tend to get lost, this area is a complicated three-dimensional labyrinth, that requires a lot of attention to navigate.
