Tunnel Hunt has a complicated history. Originally, it was inspired by the landing sequence of 'Alien' and was rendered using vector graphics. Later on, custom rendering hardware was developed to show the tunnel as ovals, and then simplified to be rectangles to reduce the cost.
Similarly to other Atari games from the late 70s, Tunnel Hunt has a MOS 6502 CPU, but assumedly, the custom graphics hardware is rendering the tunnel.
Various prototypes were modified and tested in arcades by Atari before they decided to sell the prototype off to Exidy who released it as 'Vertigo' and later Centuri that released it in 1982 as 'Tube Chase'.
