Facts

  • When jumping from one rope to another, make sure that they are in sync, both swinging left and right simultaneously. Not intuitive, but it works.

  • On the GAME OVER screen, before the number of continues is listed, Hold Select+I (rightmost/jump button) and mash D-pad left to add more continues. Turbo should not be enabled, this is incorrectly stated on GameFAQs.
I think this cheat can only be activated once.

Sliding attack from right, left, right, right, left (at column), left.

  • ZONE.5E: Go down the well to go to 5I. Avoid wells from then on until 5P.

Analysis

  • I think this is a great game, and I'm thinking about what design decisions that makes it work so well. Here are a few observations:
    - Enemies don't respawn: This allows you to strategically reposition yourself on safe ground and fight them there.
    - Precision attacks: Your attack strength is maximized if you don't spam the attack button. Getting precision hits that do lots of damage makes the basic combat more engaging that e.g. Castlevania.
    - Few, difficult enemies The enemies are difficult, but relatively few, and are reused in different combinations. Every enemy is tricky, but you get to fully learn their patterns and exploit their weaknesses.
    - Powerful upgrades: Your weapon upgrades make a big difference, and since the enemies are reused a lot, it feels great to kill an enemy in fewer hits than earlier in the game.

  • Trying out the PC Engine core on the MiSTer, Legendary Axe seems like a game I should get back to. It's pretty fun.
  • 2020-07-08
  • I played a bit more of this. The game seems cool, but I have some weird issues with the jump button. Is this a bug in the PC-Engine MiSTer core?
  • 2020-07-11
  • I fixed the controller issue on the MiSTer by going to the 'System Settings', choosing 'Define joystick buttons', and reassigning everything. Now multiple button inputs work perfectly. I think I accidentally mapped square+something on my PS4 controller.
  • 2022-06-05
  • I handed the controller to Erik for this one, and he seemed to enjoy the tight gameplay. I should play this more seriously at some point.

  • Our guest room at Malu's friends house in Finland had an incredible surprise: A huge CRT TV, connected to an amazing collection of rare consoles, including a NeoGeo, a Famicom top-loader, a Super Famicom, and a PC-Engine CD with an Everdrive. I picked up the white controller for the first time and booted up Legendary Axe. The old machine sounded like I expected, and the composite output delivered a nice soft image. I prefer my crisp digital MiSTer output, I want to be able to see every pixel. I managed to reach level 3 in Legendary Axe, enjoying the great music as always.

  • Got the Zone 3b achievement. -

    I love this game.

  • 2023-08-07
  • I reached Zone 4B using the continue cheat.

  • Got the Zone 5 achievement. -

Finally killed the boss duo at the end of Zone 4. I didn't really understand the pattern, I just got lucky.

  • I have reached ZONE.5 and I'm having trouble with the spear and shield guy in the beginning. I think he only takes two hits (even on the shield) with the fully powered up axe.

  • In ZONE.5, the small platforms with axe throwers are difficult. I can get through those platforms by spamming the axe attack, parrying the axes and attacking the throwers.
