Facts

  • The character is named Taizo Hori (ホリ タイゾウ 'Hori Taizo'). It's a pun on 'horitai zo' which means 'I want to dig'.

Analysis

  • Adaptive Music - this game uses synchronized scoring/'Mickey Mousing', where the music starts and stops whether or not Taizo Hori is moving, roughly syncing music to the character movement and animation.

  • Dig Dug is one of the earliest single-screen games where you dig through the level, later exemplified by games such as Boulder Dash. Dig Dug is special, though, because you kill enemies by inflating them, which, when I think about it, is pretty horrible. It is a great game, which I have played quite a few times, but didn't record a score before now.
  • Got the score 10180 in MAME. GO FOR THE WORLD RECORD NOW !
  • The current world record is 5,225,260 points. I think maybe I won't go for it.

  • Got the score 11240 in MAME.
  • 2014-07-06
  • Got the score 18740 in MAME.
  • I tried to continue a few times, but it seems the levels just loop with more of the same enemies on top of each other. Apparently, there is a kill screen at level 256.

  • Got the score 31850 in MAME. I was streaming a couple of arcade games to Twitch for an hour.

  • Got the score 38200 in MAME.

  • Got the score 65870 in MAME. I did an OBS test recording in 900x1200 (60 FPS) with a bit rate of 6 MB/s. This was my first experiment with recording vertical screen games in portrait mode. It should improve fidelity and look better on mobile phone screens. To my surprise, this test recording ended up being my best Dig Dug score yet.

  • Got the score 29210.

I got to play one of my favorite arcade games at the 'Pinball Hall of Fame' in Las Vegas.
