Passwords / Cheat Codes

  • Password menu: Left + select
  • Difficulty-related passwords:
    Invincibility MIKARIN
    Easy mode YANDI
    Higher Difficulty Level	HIGEPIN
    Arcade mode MAKIRIN
  • Infinite continues: Hold I + II + Select and press Run at the title screen or at the game over screen.

Facts

  • If you pick up the same color power-up several times, you level up your weapon.
  • This does have limited continues. Not sure how many.
  • The protagonist is named RAD RALPH.
  • YANDI - Easy mode seems to give you more enemy drops: lives, shield power, smart bombs, and invincibility.

  • Stage 4 Boss - is easily defeated by bombing the middle ant guy before shooting the rotating worms.

  • Stage 5 Boss - The mother brain has a fixed movement pattern where it at one point does a few snaky movements and then goes right, all the way down and across. Make sure to avoid this.

  • Stage 7 Boss - Be sure to avoid the yellow shots and the green homing projectiles from the boss itself. The rest can be shot. The green projectiles can generally be avoided by dodging to the side and upwards, making them fly offscreen.

  • Secret Super-Weapon Pick up weapons: Red, Blue, Green, Green, Yellow, Red. Get hit and lose the weapon mutation.

Analysis

  • I think this game is generally underestimated, I think it controls incredibly well and has an interesting weapon system. The levels are well designed and varied - each level has a completely new set of enemies, and they are placed together in ways where their abilities synergize to create unique challenges (e.g. Stage 7 where large enemies are forcing you to move horizontally, while vertical cannons are boxing you into a smaller space. The bosses have unique challenges, sometimes in a puzzly way (e.g. the Stage 5 boss where you easily defeat the boss by focusing on the ant and not the weird worms circling around it).

Quotes

  • Clayton Walnum, Video Games & Computer Entertainment, January 1990:

As for playability, this is one tough game, a bug blastathon that will leave your controller hand aching. As with many shoot-'em-ups, until you learn the enemies' attack patterns, even the first level will seem to require superhuman coordination and speed. You'll definitely want to have your turbo fire cranked up for this one. [..] In summary, Cyber Core is a fast-action shoot-'em-up that's challenging enough to tax even veteran gun hands.

  • This insect-based shoot 'em up is cute and fun, and the graphics is appealing, if simplistic. It looks like the game has infinite continues.
  • 2021-05-14
  • This game is great.
  • Got the score 161300 in MiSTer.
  • 2021-06-24
  • Got the score 52900 in MiSTer.
  • 2021-06-30
  • Reached the Stage 5 boss.
  • 2022-09-15
  • Another game I tried on the PC-Engine CD in our guest room was Cyber Core. I was too tired to play well, so I didn't get far.
  • 2023-01-19
  • Got the score 81400 in RetroArch.
  • I'm now rank 13991 on RetroAchievements, which is top 40.9%.

  • 2025-02-04
  • I completed stage 1-6 on Easy mode. If I'm using the built-in infinite continue cheat, it's equivalent to starting from stage 7. The codes to input are: YANDI and MIHO.

  • There is a manual here.

  • 2025-02-05
  • Completed the game on Easy (stage select) difficulty (MiSTer).

I have attempted to beat this insect shoot 'em up time and time again since 2020, but this time I took it seriously. I read all I could find on the weapon systems, including the secret super weapon used in the final stage, I learned about the passwords, specifically YANDI for the unreasonably named 'Easy mode' (which is not easy at all) and the level select passwords, and I studied other playthroughs. As it always is, if you're armed with enough knowledge, you can beat a game, regardless of slow reflexes.
