Halo Infinite is the 6th Halo game, the follow-up to 'Halo 5: Guardians' (2015). It features a more open level design, and a grappling hook, which is a lot of fun.

Facts

  • 120 FPS - This game has a quality mode that runs at 60FPS, and a performance mode that runs at 120FPS.
  • To play in 120 FPS mode, I had to enable it in the TV and Display options and restart the game. When the 120 FPS mode is enabled, the resolution drops noticeably below 4K, even in the main menus.

  • No Split-screen Campaign Unbelievably, this game is tagged as local coop on the store, and has a menu where you can enter a coop campaign, and even allows you to start it - but after a countdown, nothing happens. The split-screen campaign was never made! But the game pretends it's still there.

"In order to improve and accelerate ongoing live service development, and to better address player feedback and quality of life updates, we have reallocated studio resources and are no longer working on local campaign split-screen co-op" - 343 Industries, quoted from IGN 2022-09-01

  • AI Scan - D-pad down reveals targets in yellow. It is absolutely essential for figuring out what to do.

Log entries

    2021-12-05
  • I started playing the beta release, the full campaign coming soon.
  • I tried out a bunch of the modes available now, and I especially enjoyed 1v8 local bot matches on normal difficulty.
  • 2021-12-09
  • The campaign was available, and I played through the first section in the spaceship, up until the world map opens up. I like it a lot so far.

  • Frustrated by the lack of in-game screenshots available online, I have started an effort to get my own screenshots for the new games I add to this log. Getting screenshots from the Series X turned out to be quite complicated. Here is how I do it currently:
    1. Take a screenshot using the Xbox built-in screenshot feature.
    2. From the Xbox, upload it to OneDrive.
    3. Download the XJR file from OneDrive to a Windows machine
    4. Convert to 24-bit using XnConvert. I use the following hand-adjusted actions: Gammasat = 2.5; Black/White Points = 18,200; Change color depth = 24 bits
    5. Save as PNG
  • 2023-03-16
  • The image quality of the 120 FPS mode is noticeably worse than the 60 FPS mode, and the frame rate is not stable. I don't recommend playing this in 120 FPS mode.

  • 2024-08-11
  • I played an hour or so. I found a Warthog and some friendly soldiers, and started roaming the area and took over a FOB (Forward Operating Base). This game is great, I should play more.

  • I've been liberating FOBs and squads around the map. It's very satisfying to slowly take over. It almost feels like a Base Attack game.

  • 2024-08-27
  • I should play this in 120 FPS performance mode, if I'm not recording anyway.
