The keyboard layout is *all over the place*. It's one of the worst keyboard layouts I have ever tried to learn, which says a lot. In a standard combat situation you use F1-F4 to select characters or WASZ to move the cursor, U to attack, 1-6, <>, and Space to activate spells, and the numeric keypad for movement. If I had 4 arms, this would probably work perfectly.

The mental load of playing with keyboard is almost too much to deal with.

The MiSTer allows remapping controller buttons to keys. I tried creating a Dualshock 4 layout for this game, but there are just too many buttons. The spell level keys 1-6 are killing my layout plans.

I think the best solution is to remap keys to other keys and make a keyboard layout that is centered around the home row. I will try keeping movement on the left home keys, and the selection cursor on the right home keys.

In the MiSTer menu, I can remap keys temporarily by first pressing the key I want to use, and then which key I want simulated.

I now have a usable remapping that remaps the numeric keypad to QWER for rotation and ASDF for strafing, and JKL; for cursor movement. I think I can get used to this.

The remapped keyboard works pretty well, although moving items around by dropping them on the ground is clunky to say the least. Entering the word from the manual was a puzzle in itself, because I didn't have all the letters to type in the word, because they were mapped to the numeric keypad, etc. I found the complete list of words in an old abandonia.com forum post from 2005.

If I'm getting back into this, I could use the Official Clue Book.
