COMPLETED

Loom is an impressive adventure game, with a unique musical spell system and sleek, modern game design. The game has a short, yet grand story, with a tone that is unique among adventure games, serious and poetic. However, the Amiga version is not great, on an Amiga 500 it runs at an appaulingly low frame rate, and the amount of disk swapping is downright crazy and ends up detracting from the experience. Preferably, it should be played on a newer Amiga with a HD or 3 disk drives.

  • A weird adventure game that was hard to make sense of. I still remember the music puzzles.

  • After hooking up my A500, I put in this old Lucasfilm adventure. Interesting how the music is actually Mickey Mousing the graphics at certain points.
  • Oh, the Mickey Mousing music is actually spells. Right. Loom.
  • Everybody is a swan.
  • F5 is the load/save menu.
  • So much disk swapping...
  • And the frame rate ... at times it's as low as 2-3 FPS. So slow!
  • I've reached a new island!

  • Bobbin turned a flock of sheep green using his Dye spell, to better hide them from the dragon. And then the dragon grabbed Bobbin and carried him away.
  • Reached the Forge. Enough adventure for tonight.
  • Elegant solution to having both reversible and non-reversible spells: non-reversible spells are palindromes.
  • I just swapped disks four times to load a cutscene. Four times. The game has three disks.
  • Oh no, the Blacksmith boy was eaten. How horrible!
  • Nooooooh! I tried to save my game for the first time today, and there was a read/write error on the save disk. I cancelled and wanted to save to a different save file, but then the game crashed. Guru Meditation. All that progress ... all those slow-ass cutscenes ...
  • *sob*
  • OK, let's try this again. Man, I really hope one of my savegames work.
  • The game crashed when I inserted the save disk. That's not a good sign.
  • It crashed again. I don't think I'm going to get that savegame. I wonder how fast I can get back to where I where when skipping everything... It's 12:08 now.
  • One hour later. I'm at the dragon's lair.
  • Back to where I was... Cobb is dead. 1:20.
  • Whoa, that death animation of Mandible was disgusting and amazing. :)
  • Completed the game on Standard difficulty. That ending is pretty crazy! The dead rose from their grave, Chaos descended, Bobbin walked in space, and finally, the universe was separated in two halves, and Bobbin turned into a swan. Also, The Moon is a scythe.
