In the 80s, filled polygons was an amazing new invention, the first expression of a solid 3D environment. Rasterizers could render simple patterns into the polygons, such as ordered dithering, creating the illusion of more colours that limited palettes could produce. In the early 90s, after texture mapping was introduced in games like Wolfenstein 3D, the technique went out of vogue for about 20 years, and then resurged in the early 10s with games like Futuridium and Crossy Road.
